this is me:

My name is Karl.
I’ve been active with a camera since I was about 6.
I can’t remember a time when photography and video weren’t what I aspired to do in life.

Ireland

Graduating from college (far too long ago) in 2016, awarded for “student of the year” and for
“outstanding achievements in photography” after having worked my way through college
both in a camera shop and as an assistant to some of Ireland's top photographers.

I began freelance work, shooting multiple music videos and festival-screened short films.
As well as shooting both national and multinational campaigns and online content pieces for
Jameson, Dyson, Carlsberg, The Late Late Show, Safefood Europe, STYLE club, among others.

At the same time, I taught Photography and Digital Media part-time in Youth Reach Crumlin:
a centre for youths who are underprivileged or overlooked by mainstream schooling.
I was, by a wide margin, the centre’s youngest educator and one of the youngest in the country at 22.

My mantra as a teacher was always to speak earnestly and in a non-hierarchical, conversational manner.
Many of my students won awards and began college courses in photography or film.
I believe my genuine passion for photography and film enabled this.
From there, I was offered a job as a college lecturer in Ballyfermot College of Further Education.
Again, the youngest on the staff, with a solid record of results
and frequently asked to leave the staff room
(they kept thinking I was a student on account of my cursedly youthful looks).

In 2022 I moved to Vancouver and began working for Understance lingerie and undergarments.

I started as a video content creator, and worked up to Studio Lead.
Managing and executing
all photography and video needs for a multinational and multi-million dollar company.

By the end of my tenure, my responsibilities included:

- Sourcing, starting and running a full-time multimedia studio.

- Concepting, directing, shooting and editing all lens-based video for the company,
including: organic, socials, online, streaming, OOH video marketing
and television ads across Canada and the U.S.

- Concepting, directing, shooting and editing all lifestyle photography & OOH marketing images
seen across cities in Canada and the U.S.

- Developing and efficiently running a large-scale E-commerce photography studio.
Catering for multi-national companies’ e-commerce needs (it was a lot.)

- Heading the visual style and lighting for cohesively branded multimedia
across multiple platforms, online, offline and in-store.

- Facilitating all of this while fostering an ethos that made our models
want to tell us just how much they enjoyed our collabs.

My work for Understance contributed directly to the sale of tens of millions of dollars in products.



In Understance, as a lecturer and in all of the sets and shoots I have run:
I have always received positive feedback, not just for the quality of my work,
but for the quality of communication and the positive interactions that I prioritise.

To collaborate joyfully is to be inspired, whether it be to shoot or to learn.
I do not subscribe to the notion that talented artists or photographers should be
unapproachable or gatekeep knowledge.
On the contrary, I have spent half a decade teaching the exact opposite.

To this day, I approach creating things with the same joy and eagerness as
the young boy who shot Lego films with his brother.
The only difference is I now have forty thousand dollars worth of studio equipment to play with.
…. and have to pay taxes.
